Virginia Bergmann

A self-taught artist, born in Toronto, with deep roots in Nova Scotia, Virginia draws her inspiration from an enduring love of the countryside. As a child, on annual excursions to cottage country, she would gaze wistfully out the car window at old homesteads with their meadows and graceful elms. Or, while attending ballet workshops in turreted Victorian homes, she would be captivated by moody, mysterious landscapes in gilded frames. These early encounters with art and nature became etched in her memory, shaping her lifelong pursuit of serenity through painting. Virginia’s approach is informed by the Tonalist tradition, a movement which had its roots in the early French Barbizon School, known for its soft transitions, muted palettes, and meditative mood. Her work has been juried into scores of national exhibitions from coast to coast winning multiple awards and honourable mentions. She is an elected signature member of both the Federation of Canadian Artists and the Society of Canadian Artists. Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections worldwide.
