Artist Statement
Les Petits Nus is a vibrant series by Canadian artist Keitha McClocklin. The works feature single figures embellished by a vivid palette, patterns, and various nods to art history.
The works reflect a modern hybrid between past and present. The viewer can see the influence of medieval frescoes and modern colourists through Keitha’s use of flat background planes and patterns to create a push and pull within the volume of the figures and in the overall pictorial plane.
As both a fine artist and a colourist, Keitha’s skillful use of colour and contrast is on full display in her Les Petit Nus series. The pieces explore several aspects of colour theory, and invite the viewer to consider how the placement of one colour next to another affects the viewer’s perception of tone, saturation, temperature and depth.
This special monochrome release was created for the 2023 The Art of Colour exhibition at Dervilia Art + Design. The titles for the five works are an homage to Henri Matisse’s painting, Red Room (Harmony in Red).
These five paintings are part of Les Petits Nus, an ongoing series that celebrates colour, pattern, the figure and the mixed media used to create them.
